A few months ago we wrote a couple of articles about the cost of designing a good logo and tips on how to create a good one. This week, we will be discussing what a good logo design process looks like.

The Importance of A Good Logo

Kids Link Logos are extremely important for any business. To the public, a logo represents your brand and reminds them of your company. In a lot of ways they are the point on which brand recognition hangs. In this day and age, where every company has to have a website, a top-notch logo is in high demand. This also means that there are logos everywhere. So how do you make your logo stand out amidst the thousands of others? Part of what will help you do this is a finely honed and perfect design process.

Step 1: Create a Design Brief

A good design brief communicates your company's objectives and goals. This will help you narrow down what it is you want your logo to communicate. A design brief should include:
  • A 2-3 sentence summary of your brand and businessClip Art
  • Who your target audience is
  • Company values you want to communicate
  • Stylistic preferences (e.g. artistic vs. minimal)
  • Colour preferences (if any)
  • Example images of things you like
  • Special requests or comments

Step 2: Research and Brainstorm

Use your design brief to help guide this part of the process. Do your research and brainstorm with your design team to come up with some ideas for your logo. You'll need to determine whether or not you want to include your name in the logo. You will also need to consider the different ways you are going to use your logo. Ideally, it should be recognizable in both a small and large scale. Also, be sure to research other company logos to be inspired by. This is a great way to help you determine what you like and what you don't like, but be sure you don't copy anything!

Step 3: Sketching and Prototyping

New Balance Sketching: In the early stages of your design process, you may have many different ideas for your logo. Be sure to sketch these all out on paper so you can see what works and what doesn't. This is important because even a dud can end up sparking a great idea or element that you want to use in the final product. Sketch as much as you can before you start creating the image on a computer. The sketching process will help you conceptualize your logo. Prototyping: Once you have a basic idea of what you want your logo to look like, start creating prototypes that you can show to a test market. Testing your logo will help provide you with valuable feedback that will help you hone the image of your logo. This step is crucial to creating a successful and memorable logo. logos_combined

Step 4: Revise and Add Final Touches

Once you've gotten a lot of professional and audience feedback on your logo, edit and finalize it! However, keep your ears open to feedback. Some companies, like Pepsi, have revamped their logo because they felt it became out of date or because it was simply too confusing. Be sure to keep your ears open to customer and professional feedback, since there's always room for improvement!
